What changed with the June 2023 Korean Age Unification Law (만나이 통일법)?

Effective June 28, 2023, South Korea officially amended the Civil Act and General Act on Public Administration to unify all legal and administrative age reckoning to International Age (만나이). South Koreans became 1 or 2 years younger on official records.

When does Year Age (연나이) still apply?

A few specific statutes retain Year Age (Current Year - Birth Year) for administrative efficiency, most notably the Youth Protection Act for purchasing tobacco and alcohol (legal starting January 1st of the year turning 19) and the Military Service Act.

1. International Age (만나이)
