IRS Mileage Rate 2026 and How the Deduction Works

Quick Answer

The 2026 IRS standard mileage rate is 72.5¢ per business mile from January 1 to June 30 and 76¢ from July 1, 2026. Multiply the miles driven in each period by its rate: 5,000 miles in each half is $3,625 + $3,800 = $7,425. Medical and military moving miles are 20.5¢, then 23.5¢; charity miles are 14¢.

How to calculate your mileage deduction

  1. Total the business miles from your mileage log. Driving between your home and a regular workplace is commuting and never counts.
  2. Split the miles by rate period when the IRS changes the rate mid-year, as it did on July 1, 2026.
  3. Multiply each period's miles by its rate and add the results.
  4. Add business parking fees and tolls. Do not add gas, insurance, repairs or depreciation: the standard rate already covers them.
  5. Report the total on Schedule C (line 9) if you are self-employed, or Schedule F for farming.

Who can claim the mileage deduction?

Self-employed people, sole proprietors, 1099 contractors and gig drivers deduct business miles on Schedule C. W-2 employees cannot deduct unreimbursed mileage on their federal return: the deduction for unreimbursed employee expenses is gone permanently. The exceptions are Armed Forces reservists, qualified performing artists, fee-basis state or local government officials and employees with impairment-related work expenses, who use Form 2106.

What counts as business mileage

Counts: driving to clients, customers and job sites; between two workplaces; to a temporary work location; to the bank, post office or supplier for the business; and from a home office that is your principal place of business to other work locations.

Does not count: commuting from home to your regular office or shop, personal errands on the way, or miles your employer already reimbursed.

Standard mileage rate vs actual expenses

Instead of the standard rate you can deduct the business share of actual costs: gas, oil, repairs, tires, insurance, registration, lease payments and depreciation. Actual expenses usually win for expensive or inefficient vehicles; the standard rate wins for economical cars and needs far less paperwork. To use the standard rate on a car you own, you must choose it in the first year the car is used for business. You cannot use it for five or more vehicles operated at the same time, or after claiming accelerated depreciation or a Section 179 deduction on the car.

Is mileage reimbursement taxable?

Not if your employer uses an accountable plan and pays no more than the IRS rate. The plan must require a business purpose, a mileage log submitted within a reasonable time (the IRS safe harbor is 60 days) and the return of any excess (within 120 days). Anything paid above the IRS rate, or a flat car allowance with no log, is taxable wages and belongs on your W-2.

Worked example: a rideshare driver in 2026

A driver logs 8,000 business miles from January to June and 9,000 from July to December, plus $420 of tolls and airport parking.

8,000 × $0.725 = $5,800 · 9,000 × $0.76 = $6,840 · $5,800 + $6,840 + $420 = $13,060

Schedule C deduction: $13,060. In the 22% bracket that saves roughly $2,873 of income tax and $1,845 of self-employment tax.

Mileage log: what the IRS expects

For each trip record the date, destination, business purpose and miles. Note the odometer reading at the start and end of the year so you can show total miles and the business share. A log written at or near the time of the trip is the strongest evidence; reconstructed logs are often rejected in audits (IRS Publication 463).

Perguntas frequentes

What is the IRS mileage rate for 2026?

72.5 cents per business mile for miles driven from January 1 to June 30, 2026, and 76 cents per mile from July 1, 2026 (IRS news release IR-2026-29). The medical and military moving rate rose from 20.5 to 23.5 cents; the charity rate stays at 14 cents.

Can I deduct mileage for driving to work?

No. Driving from home to your regular workplace is commuting and is never deductible, even if you take work calls on the way. Trips from your regular workplace to clients, between job sites or to a temporary work location are deductible business miles.

Can W-2 employees deduct mileage?

Generally no. Unreimbursed employee business expenses are no longer deductible on the federal return. Only Armed Forces reservists, qualified performing artists, fee-basis government officials and employees with impairment-related work expenses can still deduct them on Form 2106. Ask your employer to reimburse business miles at the IRS rate instead.

Is mileage reimbursement taxable income?

Reimbursement under an accountable plan is tax-free up to the IRS standard rate. If your employer pays more per mile, or pays a flat car allowance without a mileage log, the excess is taxable wages reported on your W-2.

Should I use the standard mileage rate or actual expenses?

Compare both in the first year you use the car for business. The standard rate is simpler and usually larger for fuel-efficient cars; actual expenses can be larger for expensive or heavy vehicles. If you start with actual expenses and depreciation on a car you own, you cannot switch to the standard rate for that car later.
